Sanjay Upadhya BJP Borivali candidate

Sanjay Upadhyay, a senior BJP official, has been chosen by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its candidate for the Borivali constituency in the upcoming Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections. As BJP Maharashtra’s general secretary, Upadhyay is a notable figure within the party but is not a resident of Borivali, which has led to some controversy locally. This is the third consecutive time the BJP has selected a non-local candidate for this seat, following previous choices of Vinod Tawde in 2014 and Sunil Rane in 2019

The decision has sparked frustration among BJP workers and local leaders. Former BJP MP Gopal Shetty, who is a prominent figure in Borivali, expressed disappointment with the party’s approach of not consulting local leaders or members on this candidate selection. Shetty has decided to run as an independent candidate, citing strong support from Borivali residents who prefer a locally rooted representative. This move has intensified competition within the constituency and has raised questions about potential divisions within the BJP’s voter base

.

Despite the internal tensions, the BJP remains focused on consolidating support across Mumbai’s key constituencies, of which Borivali is crucial. Sanjay Upadhyay’s candidacy is a strategic part of BJP's broader efforts to maintain its stronghold in Maharashtra amidst the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition’s rising influence. The outcome in Borivali will be closely watched, as it may reveal whether the BJP’s choice of an “outsider” candidate will resonate with voters, or if it could risk eroding the party’s traditionally strong base in this Mumbai suburb
